Dear Neighbors,
Here is a quick recap of our Community Meeting:
We held a productive community meeting on March 25th at the Benjamin Branch of the Greensboro Public Library to discuss traffic concerns on David Caldwell Drive.
Sixteen community members were joined by David Ortega and Tonya Brown from the Greensboro Department of Transportation (GDOT).
David Ortega provided an overview of the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP), which you can learn more about at www.gsontmp.org. He then reviewed the results of the NTMP scorecard specifically for David Caldwell Drive.
Based on the data, GDOT has concluded that the primary issue is traffic volume, not speed. While this diagnosis may be subject to debate, it will inform the measures taken to address the situation.
Here’s a summary of the potential solutions GDOT is willing to explore:
- Temporary Blockage: Temporarily blocking neighborhood entrances from Holden Road (Robin Hood, Hill-n-Dale, Stratford, Shady Lawn) to determine the effect on traffic volumes in the neighborhood.
- Diversion: Implementing some kind of traffic diversion near the shopping center at the Battleground Ave end of David Caldwell Drive.
- Sidewalk Installation: Investigating the feasibility of installing sidewalks along David Caldwell Drive.
It’s important to note that:
- According to GDOT, stop signs are not considered a viable option, as studies indicate they can increase accident rates.
- Speed bumps are also unlikely to be recommended, based on available evidence (though some of this evidence is anecdotal).
Next Steps:
David requested that we meet again as a community (without the GDOT presence) to review and discuss the potential solutions.
I think that it would be valuable to try to engage more members of the community, so please reach out to your neighbors who might be interested in participating in a constructive way.
I have booked the community room at the Benjamin Branch of the library for May 6th at 6:00 PM for our meeting. Please RSVP here and invite your neighbors to do the same so we can gauge how many people will be in the room.
Our next meeting will not focus on rehashing the problems but instead, we will look to reach some kind of consensus regarding potential solutions. After that we will hold another meeting with David and his team to discuss implementation. I have booked the community room for May 28th and will reach out to David’s team to invite them.
Please let me know if I left anything out of this recap or if you feel I have misrepresented anything.
We appreciate David and Tonya’s willingness to work with our community to find solutions. We will continue to keep you updated as we move forward in this process.
